33 – Protect Your Website From Hackers

It doesn’t matter how big your business is, hackers don’t discriminate. With a recent hack on my website, I thought it a good time to provide an introduction to security for those working on WordPress websites. I review hacked website symptoms as well as tips on keeping your site as safe as possible. Although not glamorous it is important to protect the investment you have made in your website. Nothing is foolproof, but you can reduce your risk of having your website hacked.

Symptoms of a hacked website:

  • Your website loads very slowly or crashes
  • Your website displays another website
  • Random words placed in weird places
  • Google Chrome Alerts
  • Google Search Alerts
  • Your host has removed your website
  • You are no longer found in Google
  • Site traffic changes –  spikes or drops
  • Unable to login
  • Suspect user accounts
  • Unable to send or receive WordPress emails
  • Hijacked search results
  • Pop-up/under

Steps you can take:

  • Strong passwords
  • 2-step authentication
  • Limit login attempts
  • Password protect wpadmin
  • Update, update, update
  • Back up your own site
